I love dry erase boards. Every time I see one I want to write and draw on it. Maybe it is the teacher in me. Saying that, the dry erase board in my office is relatively blank. Currently, I have pictures of my dog and nieces taped to the board. My dry erase board is used more like a bulletin board. In a small corner, I usually write a saying that I hear and like. Recently, I wrote the social media policy from Best Buy that I heard from the recruiting summit in Minneapolis on ERE.
Boring.
While visiting other offices, I glance at their dry erase boards. The dry erase boards are full. They actively interact with their board like a member of the family. What is wrong with me?
As I look around, here is what I see:
- To do lists
- Mine change daily. I have a notepad on my desk for to do’s.
- Open positions
- Recruiters list open positions and status updates, including what candidates are in the process. I don’t recruit.
- Goals
- Not sure I have a big enough dry erase board for that.
- Upcoming events
- I use my outlook calendar for this.
- Projects
That is a thought, projects. Maybe I could list my current projects. I do have a lot that I am working on. What do you think? Do you have a dry erase board? What is on it and what do you use it for?

I love my dry erase board. I’m definitely a list maker because I like to see it crossed off. I also love using different colors. One thing I like to have on mine is the word:
OK
Now, go write it on your board. In capital letters. Now, turn your head sideways to the left. See, it’s a little stick man. Ok, now get back to work . lol

My supervisor used to have “Why?” written on hers. It was all about questioning those same old decisions everyone had always rubber-stamped before. She’s also a quoter and updates it weekly with a new favorite. My other coworker has a latin phrase on his board roughly translated to “where are we going?”
Have something that makes people ask you. It’s a great convo starter!

Trish, I miss looking at your board! You always used it well. I will have to try the OK guy!
Ben – luv it! I will have to try why and other convo starters. Thanks!
